Austinist Editorial: Yet Another Tour de Lance?

Fortune smiles on Mr. Armstrong, who - after deftly conquering this year's Tour for the seventh consecutive time with the aide of his elite Discovery Channel team, earning the resentful ire of most of Europe, and brushing aside oft-repeated doping allegations, earlier this week proposed to longtime girlfriend Sheryl Crow. Austinist offers our congratulations to the happy couple!

We were, however, taken aback by this little teaser attached nonchalantly to the press release - it seems that the Texas wunderkind is considering yet another go at Le Tour next year. Might this put him in the running for both God Emperor of Cycling and, more importantly, Most Obnoxious Athlete Ever?

Granted, we wholeheartedly agree with the guy's sentiment (from the Statesman):

"I'm thinking about it," Armstrong said. "I'm thinking it's the best way to piss (the French) off."

Later this week, a French testing firm is expected to report its findings as to whether Lance used erythropoetin, aka EPO, back in 1999. While both USA Cycling and Austinist enthusiastically support Lance's vehement denials, neither Paris sports-daily L'Equipe nor much of France seem to believe him - or, perhaps more appropriately, care to.

But seriously, Lance - you've well proven your point: no one in our generation, and likely not in many years to come, will even come close to rivaling your brilliant accomplishments. So long as there are bitter, frustrated opponents - whether they be other cyclists or other countries - the doping allegations will come and go. Riding down the Champs-Elysées an eighth time, bubbly in hand and peloton in tow, won't matter a whit - except for, perhaps, further enraging your enemies.

And consider what you stand to lose should you - and we admit that this is an unlikely scenario - fail in your quest! Leaving where you now stand, at the apex of your career, history will remember you as that golden comeback kid who scoffed at testicular cancer, reigned supreme for an astounding seven years, and went on to bed a really hot rockstar.

Remember when Napoleon invaded Russia, Lance? Seriously.

Agreed, agreed. I am so totally in agreement.

Take some time OFF, Lance. Sheesh.

how doe she manage riding a bicycle and hig high horse all at the same time? live strong, and out of site for awhile, lance.

Isn't this exactly the kind of obnoxious stereotypical American attitude that makes the rest of the world hate us? Besides, just how would winning another tour prove that he wasn't doping in '99? Lance is *the* cycling superpower in the world today. Why is he still so insecure that he feels he needs to be a douche about it? He spent too much time in Crawford. Maybe Lance *should* go into politics. He seems qualified.

I thought the obnoxious stereotypical French attitude started it...now it's continued by all the obnoxious stereotypical "sick-of-lance-ers", which is an amusing thing to actively hate. He rides a bike and helps fund cancer research, all else is bullshit perpetuated by people bitching about "those damn yellow bracelets". I don't like football, but I'm not pissing on anyone's longhorn bumper sticker.

I used to think that as a uniballed man Lance couldn't be that nutty of a guy. Now I am shown wrong. The upside of him talking about getting in is that he won't walk on water for as many people. Word had it that he was considering politics and that he is a conservative dip. Keep spending that political capitol dawg. One petty reaction at time.
