Austin, Fit!

coolrun.jpg

We like to run, but we’re intimidated by running snobs and people who wear Nike Free running shoes. Our goals have more to do with finishing races before the course closes or before it gets dark (whichever comes first), rather than placing in our age group. We don’t know much about speed work or tempo runs, and whenever our more serious running friends talk about fartleks, we inevitably find ourselves giggling uncontrollably, sometimes to the point of tears and just short of wetting ourselves.

That said, we do think it’s really cool to run marathons and half marathons. Mostly because we can eat pretty much anything we want afterward without feeling the least bit guilty. But also, it’s a big accomplishment. There are a lot of running groups in Austin and many of them are specifically geared to train folks to run the Freescale marathon or half marathon in February.

Austin Fit is one of those groups and it’s right up our alley because it’s designed for folks like us who aren’t at all worried about winning, but are merely hoping that the pregnant woman pushing a baby jogger containing triplets with a leash tied to it from which her basset hound is trailing doesn’t pass us during the race. Is that too much to ask? We don’t think so. And neither does Austin Fit, which offers a training program to get runners and walkers of all levels ready for the 3M and Freescale half marathons or the Freescale full marathon.

They’ve just started their training season, and registration is officially closed, but we have pretty reliable information that they will still take registrations through this Saturday for those who show up or register online.

Kudos to YOU TH, for being able to maintain both your running and excessive liquor consumption. If you took up smoking, you'd be a triathlete! No, seriously, running is great. Glad you've picked it up and are enjoying it.

Kudos, Ami, for this bold new step. One of Austin's many productive, functional drunks, I started running about 5 years ago to counteract the effects of my true love and sweat out some toxins.

I have never aligned myself with the physically active... at first I was embarassed and afraid that I would see people I know while running (I did) and lose hipster points (I did), but I was surprised to discover how much I enjoyed it and really didn't care because I felt great. And the beer afterwards was so much more rewarding.

I felt so inspired that I considered writing a Dr. Phil type book on fitness called "The Promise of Beer." I remember thinking, "I mean seriously, how many people really die of liver failure anyway?"

    Turns out, quite a few.

So the book idea was bad but running is good. I've run the Austin Freescale (formerly Motorola) Marathon the past three years and although I trained only with my wife (not with Austin Fit), committing to a race is a great motivator. For someone who spent 28 years avoiding any sort of physical exertion, it was somewhat of a surprise to find myself running a marathon and enjoying it.

I encourage all partiers to give running a shot and join me on Town Lake. There are many bars withing walking distance.
