We won’t argue that August has been pretty slow when it comes to new music, but there are plenty of great releases that came out today that you need to get your hands on.

jv_pixelrevolt.jpgJohn Vanderslice - Pixel Revolt
Not as catchy as his last release, but this one will grow on you. JV keeps putting out quality albums.

Black Rebel Motorcycle Club - Howl
Turns down the garage rock, and replaces it with moody acoustic blues-folk-rock.
[mp3: BRMC – Ain’t No Easy Way]

Laura Veirs - Year of Meteors
Underrated singer-songwriter releases another great album and will be opening up for Sufjan Stevens (no TX dates!)
[stream: Year of Meteors]

Minus The Bear - Menos el Oso
Math rock you can dance to.
[stream: Menos el Oso / upcoming show: 10/10 at emo's]

New Pornographers - Twin Cinema
Pop songs that linger in your head for days...
[mp3: New Pornographers – Twin Cinema]

Portastatic - Bright Ideas
Mac McCaughan (Superchunk/Merge Records founder) puts out an album of catchy rock songs that make you want to go for that long Sunday drive.
[mp3: Portastatic – I Wanna Know Girls / upcoming show: 10/27 at the parish]

V/A: The Kanye West Tribute - Indie Translations of the College Dropout
Self-explanatory title featuring local bands For Those Who Know, Belaire, Clap!Clap!, LaLaLand and Fancy Feast
[stream: Indie Translations of the College Dropout]

After the jump we catch you up with the rest of the month...

Recommended release from August 16,2005

Flotation Toy Warning - The Bluffer's Guide to the Flight Deck
UK band puts out one of the best multi-intsrumental orchestral pop albums of the year.
[stream: ftw - how the plains left me flat]

Recommended releases from August 9,2005

The Juan Maclean - Less Than Human
More DFA goodness that provides electronic dance music for us humanoids.
[stream: Less Than Human]

Holopaw - Quit +/- or Fight
A Christmas record for the summer time, gentle indie-folktronica tinged songs.
[mp3: Holopaw – Curious]

Sons and Daughters - The Repulsion Box
Glaswegian rockabilly never sounded this good

yeah, that new 'slice is great, as well as the brmc (agree with sean that it's not better than the first, but better than the last), new pornos, and the portastatic. now all i have to wait for are the new BoC and Metric discs.

  • Twin Cinema will not disappoint you. I defy you to not like this album.

    I miss the old superchunk.

The new BRMC is okay but I still like the first album better.

  • TronColtrane

    Come to Texas, Sufjan!

New Pornographers and Sons and Daughters make me toe-tappin' happy.

  • Katie Spence

I've heard good things about the New Pornographers latest.
