Although we know you like to boogey and we know you like to booze, but sometimes you need a change of pace. With that said, there are five movies being released in Austin theatres this weekend and a host of first-runs worth checking out if you have not already taken our advice.
*40-Year-Old Virgin
Contrary to semi-popular belief, this is not a film about us. So save your jokes. The Daily Show and Second City veteran Steve Carrell plays a man suffering form arrested sexual development. After struggling with his sexual prowess and ineptitude with women for several decades, Andy Stitzer (Carrell) is goaded by his sexually aggressive friends to finally end his dry spell. This leads to a crash course in womanizing, but in a touching twist, the sex-thirsty friends learn as much from the sweetly innocent Stitzer as he learns from them.

*Grizzly Man
Once again legendary filmmaker Werner Herzog has told the story of a troubled, delusional and tortured soul. The subject this time is naturalist and bear-enthusiast (and minor moron) Timothy Treadwell. Treadwell shot over 100 hours of film over five summers, documenting his fascination with the grizzly bears in Alaska. What at first appears to be the story of a wanna-be National Geographic Explorer Bear Hunter eventually develops into a tale of madness, as the vain and troubled Treadwelll loses himself in his ‘work.’ Another in a fascinating line of documentaries focused on the animal kingdom.

*Edukators
This smart and edgy German-language film from director Hans Weingartner tells the story of disillusioned youth looking to affect socio-political change and the lost idealism of the older generation with whom they are now waging their battle.

Red Eye
“Always bet on black.” Sorry, had to get that out. It’s just that it has been awhile since a good airplane-suspense movie came out, and we are feeling nostalgic. Horror mastermind Wes Craven preys on our post 9-11 insecurities about terrorists and the safety of air travel. With his new thriller. The ridiculously cute Rachel McAdams (whom we would probably pay to watch read the phone book) plays a character who is used as a pawn to try and assassinate a member of the Department of Homeland Security.

My Date With Drew
Ever wonder what it’s like to try and make a documentary film? Ever wonder what it is like to struggle in anonymity in Hollywood? Ever wonder what it’s like to go on a date with Drew Barrymore? Well, Brian Herzlinger has the answers to these pressing questions. In an effort to document what it takes to get a film made and a date with his childhood crush, Herzlinger has produced a sweet movie that proves dating someone from the movies may be easier than actually making a movie. An aside: If you ever get a chance, check out Kate Hudson’s impersonation of Barrymore on SNL. Spot on.
