More Movie Magic in Austin

54865.100.jpg

Oh, Austin. There's just always something going on. For the past couple of days, there have been several giant trucks parked along our street and an abundance of cars in our neighborhood. Turns out someone's shooting a movie at the Austin Diner on Burnet, right around the corner from where we live. The crew has set up camp in a nearby parking lot, and the extras have been instructed to park along the residential streets. As we were driving by in somewhat of a daze on our way to work (yes, we have real jobs!) this morning, we noticed lights, cameras, and other miscellaneous film equipment set up around our beloved Austin Diner. We also saw someone in a white cowboy hat - *gasp* could it have been Austin wonderboy Robert Rodriguez? We couldn't tell for sure.

Anyone have any info. about this? If we hear anything, we'll keep you updated!

That one came to my mind, too. But this is just speculation. I want the facts, Odam!

It's definitely "How to Eat Fried Worms." All the houses in the hood got a permission slip that explained the filming details (howdy neighbor). Also, the red truck parked on the corner of Lawnmont and Burnet has a little sign in the front window.

Do you know what's up with the "Brown Toad" sign at the Diner?

in your face, bre. i take back all my glowing comment(s) about you

Oh, right on - thanks Patita! I didn't see the sign in the truck. And I live in the apartments, so I didn't get a slip. Wah.

And I don't know about the "Brown Toad." I'm guessing it's the name of the Diner in the movie?

Whatever, Matt. You love me.

i ate at the mighty Austin Diner last weekend and all the interior is totally different. All the quirky old vintage cooking equipment is gone and has been replaced with 100s of cheesy frogs, turtles, and other green ceramic/glass things.
I thought that is was a poor choice in design but now it makes perfect sense that it is for a movie...

HEY I work there. At the Austin Diner. Here's the low down.
They are filming How to Eat Fried Worms. We're closed all this week but will reopen on Saturday. The Brown Toad sign is there for strictly movie purposed. As is the giant toad on the roof, and all the crap inside. Hopefully the movie people will take everything down and put back all our stuff. I don't know if anyone ever noticed, but we had some drawings of the staff on napkins right in the entry way. They took those down. I hope they didn't throw them away. I mean, they were just paper napkins with silly renditions of the servers on them, but they were OUR paper napkins with silly renditions of the servers on them...

Anyway, come to the diner on Saturday and sit on the patio! That's where I'm working, and I won't be making any $$$, because it's effiing hot.

hey bre, somebody you know is going to the set on friday...you should go with her since i'll be at work and you seem to have such flexible hours :)

madtown, we greatly appreciate your insider's scoop!

Em, you and that certain "somebody" have my number.

Thanks for the info! I read that book as a kid, it will be interesting to see how it plays out on the big screen.

madtown, we used to look at those drawings every time we waited for a table. I too hope they didn't get trashed.

good luck on Saturday!

I think we should do an "Eat with the Austinist" breakfast this saturday...outside...at Austin Diner.

i'd go. anyone else?

okay, so is it something else entirely, or a very very clever disguise, that is filming between the bus station and highland mall? the signs there just say "TCK."

i am in, juice, if you will have me

odam: hot!

also, there was a crew set up the other day on Red River across from Frank Erwin.

Sweet, see you guys Saturday. My name is actually Madison, but a while ago all of the servers (but me) at the diner where from Wisconsin, and thus, named me Madtown.

I only did one of those drawings, but I dare say, it was the best. It was the dude with the hat and hairy arms. His name's Ryan. He's leaving us for Kirbey Lane.

I was the cartoon that said "I only wear T-shirts".
