Tempers rise because wages haven't
It seems non-civil service employees are getting short changed when compared to civil service employees. The Statesman illustrates this gap with a chart showing the comparison of pay raises between an engineering technician and a police officer. Really, there is no comparison, as the engineering technician's pay increased 8% in ten years, while the police officer's increased 91% and the firefighter's pay increased about 74%. Could it have something to do with the likelihood of getting shot/killed in the line of duty, perhaps?

Everybody Samsung tonight
Mayor Will Wynn is offering Samsung $57 million in tax breaks if it builds a new chip factory in Austin. In return, the city would get 1,000 new jobs and millions in revenue. We're wondering if this new facility will be built in the form of yet another tower in the downtown area. [KXAN]

  • Don't think they'd be building manufacturing in a downtown tower, however they might put another operations building downtown which would be nice...

As a city employee I can proudly say, we have not had a raise in years and have withstood most of the cuts to the budget through the past few, tough, years. On top of that, we've been asked to provide better and better services.

I think a very small, but much needed, bump in pay will be welcome - and quite honestly, because of the sacrifices we've made - the raise is deserved.

I think the salary thing resulted from a combination of collective bargaining and post 9/11 hysteria.
