Home Grown Tomatoes (You say tomato, we say yum!)

Mmmmmm, ripe red tomatoes fresh from the earth--get them now while they're in season.
Tomatoes are awesome! Tomatoes ain't no hollaback vegetables (okay, fruit). Tomatoes are nutritious and when fresh, delicious. They are an excellent source of vitamin C (screw you, oranges!). They are also one of the best sources of lycopene, a carotenoid with cancer-fighting properties. Sounds good to us! And what's great about tomotoes is that unlike many other fruits and veggies, they are more nutritious in processed form (organic ketchup, salsa, spaghetti sauce). Maybe the Reagans were right after all.
In Austin we are lucky to have numerous farmer's markets at our disposal, including an organic farm in East Austin. Boggy Creek Farm, located on 3414 Lyons Road, is a certified organic market farm. On Wednesday and Saturdays from 9am to 2pm you can purchase seasonal veggies as well as goat cheese, tofu, flowers, and farm fresh eggs.
Saturday mornings (between February and December) head on downtown to Republic Square for the Austin Farmer's Market.
Goddamnit people support your local growers and farmers and honey cultivators and jam makers! And while you're at it, support your local chickens, too.
Eating in season is healthier and kinder to the environment. Tomatoes are best in the summer and should always be stored at room temperature--never, ever refridgerated.
There are so many things to be done with tomatoes! A delicious spaghetti marinara, or salsa, or a pasta dish. Type in "tomatoes" to the recipe finder on Epicurious.com and you'll get 2451 recipes using tomatoes.
Choose one, get your ass to Boggy Creek Farm, eat, enjoy, thank the bountiful earth.
