For Those About To Rock ….

Even though the summer concert season is rapidly coming to an end, there were several major concert announcements this past week. The bad news is that Austin isn’t getting a lot of love these days, as most of these shows are an hour away.
If you won’t be roasting yourself at ACL, My Chemical Romance will be playing in San Antonio on September 24th at Sunset Station. This great bill also includes the Alkaline Trio and Reggie and the Full Effect. Reggie’s "Songs Not To Get Married To" is delightfully schizophrenic and it is one of the best releases so far this year.
If MCR is a too poppy for you, Max Cavalera and Soulfly will also be coming to San Antonio to promote their latest release, "Dark Ages." They will be playing the White Rabbit on October 14th. Throwdown and Incite will be playing support.
Despite the rumors, Opeth have not parted ways with Martin Lopez. Lopez is at home receiving treatment for a rare blood disorder. Opeth played an amazing set when they rocked Stubb’s a few weeks ago for the Sounds of the Underground off-date. Keep in mind that their new album "Ghost Reveries" will be available on August 30th.
NYC’s jazz-core heavyweights Candiria are currently writing new material for their next album, which they hope to release next year. We hope that it’s not a piece of dog shit like their last one … what happened after 300% Density?
On a final note, the masked Iowans of Slipknot will be staging an arena tour this fall in support of their platinum "Vol. 3 (The Subliminal Verses)." Unearth and the brutal As I Lay Dying are tapped to support.
There’s not many CDs worth mentioning, but the over-priced Ozzfest is in a few weeks, and we love spending $35 bucks on nachos and a bottle of beer.
Madball - Legacy (Ferret)
Before Hatebreed usurped their throne, Madball was considered the kings of East Coast Hardcore. Fronted by Freddy Cricien, younger brother of Roger Miret from the legendary Agnostic Front, Madball has been pummeling the hardcore scene since 1988. Their latest offering is produced by Zeuss and is full of drill sergeant vocals and killer breakdowns -- the face punching kind, not the ninja kick kind that most bands utilize now.
Various artists - The Piano Tribute to Iron Maiden (Vitamin)
We don’t normally consider piano/string/jazz flute tributes to bands when we review new releases, but this one stood out from the rest … seriously Vitamin guys, do we really need a piano tribute to Evanescence or a lounge tribute to Eminem? Before you Ed Heads post your comments, you gotta hear "Run to the Hills" on piano. It kicks several kinds of ass. "Flight of the Icarus" and "Number of the Beast" are also stand out tracks. Cheesy? Yes. But Maiden on piano just makes sense somehow.
And our Austinist "this one goes to eleven" pick of the week is …
Chimaira- Chimaira (Roadrunner)
What else can we say about the Great Northern Trendkill? They started on tours with bands like Ill Nino and Spineshank and now play with Lamb of God and Six Feet Under. Each release is considerably darker and features more intricate guitar work. Shades of old-school Metallica are all over this release, as Chimaria strive to create epic works of art and not just something to bang your head to. The only bad thing we have to say about "Chimaira" is that new drummer Kevin Talley is no Andy Herrick. Kevin is more than competent behind the kit and brings a more typical death sound to the ever-changing Cleveland crew, but Andy’s precise yet sporadic style was the heart of Chimaira. It gave them a unique sound that set them apart. It would be interesting to see what this release would have been with Herrick on drums …
See you in the pit.
