The Blessed Chorizo Dependency

Austinist and Curra's off of Oltorf have an extremely close relationship. We meet up every Saturday or Sunday, about thirty minutes after Austinist gets up, some times around two in the afternoon. We never show up with sunglasses like all the other hung over patrons in the joint, even though we probably should. We like to stagger up, still questionably sober (don’t you worry, we get a ride from our girlfriend, because we’re super-safe like that). Sometimes, we even force ourselves out our front door, into the cruel afternoon light, with the bloodshot eyes of a meth addict, two different sandals, an inside-out t-shirt, and crusty shit of unknown origin lining our lips. Like we just crossed the Mojave on a pogo stick.

That’s right, we admit it. We are Migas-With-Veggie-Chorizo-junkies. And we don’t care how broken we appear when it’s being served up. As long as we get that fix.

Half the time, it would probably serve us best to just have the order printed up on a laminated card, safely tucked in our wallets. That way, the poor waiter would not have to suffer through our slurred and confused reading of the menu description. When we cannot remember the name of something we order every goddamn week, and we have to sloth our way across all those words, desperately searching for the combination that will match up to the dish we’ve been craving for the past seven days. Instead, we could just drop that card on the table and never have to run the risk of an aneurysm while fumbling over that stupid menu, with all of its unnecessary selections.

Besides, sometimes we forget to add the veggie chorizo, which does not come regularly with the Migas. And that ... man that just might ruin our whole weekend, if not our week.

Austinist loves you, Curra’s. Don’t ever change. Well, you can change anything you need to, but not our Migas With Veggie Chorizo. You mess with that, and you’ll be messing with our emotions. You don’t want to see us cry, do you? Do you?

I like the migas at Tamale House #2 on Airport. They're sloppy. Sloppy and nasty good. Nasty and sloppy. Yum. Besides, there are some *truly* hungover hipsters there around noon on Saturdays mingling with us commoners. They're closed on Sundays, dammit. For the "Lord's Day" or somesuch...

  • Penguin: you sound a little obsessed. And that's okay. Ruben: I like the way you think. Josh: I drive by that place ALL the time but have never stopped in, but now I shall. Pretty close to downtown. Anything named "gringa" gets my attention like gunshots at church! Hm. I have no idea what I'm talking about here.

curra's does well for themselves, but may i suggest TACO SABROSO, just past Springdale on E. 7th? i worry that if business doesn't pick up, they might shut down... and that would be a damn shame, because the tacos (try the gringas) and salsas (presented in lovely squeeze bottles) are superb! and they've just added a seperate tiny building called FRUTA SABROSAS... devoted to concocting your favorite juices, fruta cups, and smoothies.

  • The tacos al pastor at Curra's rock. Sweet and spicy, just like me!

Beyond Curra's Migas with Veggie Chorizo, I am also a fan of Trudy's Migas n' Fajitas. It's quite a heap of food, but fuck it. A man's gotta eat, you know?

You might also try Enchiladas y Mas off of West Anderson near Burnet. DELICIOUS. I hear their Menudo is the shit too. But I haven't been able to bring myself to stomach my stomach with stomach. I'm a small person like that.
