I agree with you the way you view the issue. I remember Jack London once said everything positive has a negative side; everything negative has positive side. It is also interesting to see different viewpoints & learn useful things in the discussion.

I think I read in the Chronicle that the UT bus system has a separate set of drivers and are not going on strike. Ironically, I took the bus to work for the first time yesterday.

the same thing applies with elevators .... how the fuck are you gonna get on when you won't let me get off? .. whenever that happens, I just keep blocking the person till the doors start closing and then I jump back as the doors slam in their stupid jerk face

and then when the doors open back up pretend you don't know what their having an asshole attack about

Won't the most effective strike be to wait until UT is in session?? Every bus that passes by campus is packed to the point of suffocation. Has anyone lived in Chicago? After paying $75 a month for a bus pass and standing on the bench to get closer to the heat lamps during the hour long wait in the middle of blizzards, I find the Austin metro system to be absolutely lovely. It's a bus, people. Stop expecting roses and back rubs. Oh, and another thing: Pleeeeeease wait until the people ON the bus get OFF before you try to enter!!! Pass it on!

Smug suburbanites who think nobody rides the bus are unfortunately ubiquitous around these parts, but even out THERE, you'll notice when the hundreds of people who ride the 183-corridor express buses to UT and the capitol all of the sudden CAN'T.

Nobody wants to strike, most of the drivers involve will probably be hurtin' by the time this is resolved. I don't know the details of their health insurance or wage situation, but it's probably pretty bad for them to be at this point. I ride the bus pretty much every day and it will suck for me, but my guess is that they are pretty justified.

It's really too bad that Austin can't get their shit together and devise a decent revamped transportation system. It's a breath of fresh air to hang out in Portland or Vancouver -- where the buses are easy to figure out, clean, and frequent. Oh well.

that is kind of the pervasive idea: you guys (metro workers) are taking yourselves wayyy to seriously becuase nobody gives a damn. so there is a huge discrepancy between how these workers see themselves and their actual funciton in town. but if you ask people who ride a lot (like me) or lower-class folks who use the bus to get to work, it does matter. however, i admit, usually half the people on any given bus i ride are drug addicted homelesss people. but agian, people taking the 27 bus from dove springs into town to work will hurt, but ironically, these bus drivers are only hurting people who are apart of their own socio-economic level than anyone else. shwew, these two fingers are tired

Austin has buses? Really?

I vaguely remember seeing some of those when I've ventured from the hinterlands down to the single-digit streets.
