You pick up the movie. We’ll bring the popcorn. (New DVD Releases)

If you are looking for a quiet night at home on the couch this week, you’ve got a pretty decent selection of new releases from which to pick. All of the following were released today and are available at most of your major rental houses around town, but might we suggest Vulcan Video , Waterloo , Pedazo Chunk or I Luv Video.
Million Dollar Baby* – Somewhat controversial winner of this year’s Oscar for Best Picture, this film tells the tale of a retired fighter turned trainer (Clint Eastwood) and his nuisance-cum-protégé (Hillary Swank). The film is classic Eastwood understatement (at least cinematographically), and Morgan Freeman, Swank and Eastwood all give strong performances in this story about the lengths to which we go to find redemption.
Le Notti Bianche*(White Nights) – Based on the short story by Fyodor Dostoyevsky, this Italian classic by Luchino Visconti (Lo Straniero, Morte a Venezia) tells the story of Mario, played wonderfully by the incomparable Marcello Mastroianni, and his longing for a woman he can not seem to have. The film is a must-see for lovers of both Dostoyevsky and Italian Neo-Realismo.
Un long dimanche de fiançailles* (A Very Long Engagement) – Audrey Tautou, how we love thee. Based on the novel by Sebastien Japrisot, this French tear-jerker tells the story of love lost and possibly found again amidst the absurd horrors of war.
Live Aid: 20 Years Ago Today – Before there was Farm Aid or Live 8, there was Live Aid. It is hard to believe that it has been twenty years since the egomaniacal Bob Geldof put together this unbelievable collection of artists, bringing awareness to an Africa desperately in need of relief. Remember Phil Collins taking the Concord so he could play both shows? What an ass!
Violent Femmes : Permanent Record – From one of our favorite bands from the 80’s comes this DVD that features a live show from 1991 and various music videos. “Did I happen to mention that I’m impressed?”
Sealab 2021 (season 3) – A search for the final frontier of man, below the ocean’s surface. We must admit, we are not familiar with this cartoon. So if anyone wants to fill us and our readers in on this one, feel free.
