Diversity in Austin: UT Ranked Among Top Undergraduate Engineering Programs

From the pages of Austin Business Journal, we found out today that Black Issues in Higher Education, a magazine whose focus couldn't be clearer from their title, ranked UT Austin as the fifth top producer of minority undergraduates in their annual rankings.

UT's highest specialized ranking was in the College of Engineering, where they placed third in the nation - only slightly less diverse than UC Berkeley and Georgia Tech. Nearby Texas A&M was also rated highly at #20. Austinist isn't terribly surprised by these results, given that fully eleven percent of Austin's population is comprised of engineers and that many of the companies that make up the "Silicon Hills" - international powerhouse firms like IBM, Freescale and Samsung - integrate diversity initiatives into their corporate cultures. This often finds its way into the universities, which are inextricably linked through symbiotic research alliances and general project funding with the larger tech companies.

Way to go, UT!
