Austin is Cool and All, But We are Moving to Shanghai

Recently, Shanghaist editor Dan Washburn wrote: "It’s possible to live a very comfortable life in Shanghai for what many folks living in lower-ranked cities would think is a bargain. To wit, Shanghaiist pays slightly more than $400 a month for a two-bedroom apartment in a great part of city center. We have a maid that comes five days a week and the $60 a month we pay her is double what some other people pay. Today, Shanghaiist will eat lunch for around 30 cents. And it will be delicious."

Let's see, here in Austin we pay $1100 for a tiny two bedroom house in the North Central part of town. We don't have a maid, but if we were to get one of those More Hands women we'd be paying about $200 a month for them to clean up once a week. Once! And if we want something delicious for dinner we are gonna be forking over at least 12 bucks, we reckon. 30 cents? I think we have enough for a few Shanghai dinners in the seat cushions in our car.

If we move to Shangahi, we're hoping to become soap opera stars. And we've got dibs on Shamus.

  • Welcome to capitalism at its finest...

Not that working conditions in the US are paradise, but I couldnt live in Shanghai in all that opulance knowing that the wealth of that city is built on the misery of millions. The working conditions in China are horrendous, people work 14 hour days, live 10 to a room, and rarely get to see family or friends.

A maid that comes five days a week? Are they running a meth lab?
