Blasts Hit London Transportation System

In case you have not heard, early this morning in London (which would have been the middle of the night for us) several explosions hit the city’s transport system near the financial district and King’s Cross. Three bombs exploded in the tube system, one other on a public bus. The subway and bus lines were immediately shut down, bringing the city to a standstill. London's transportation system remains frozen indefinitely while rescuers search among the rubble for any survivors - the official death toll is at two but is expected to climb to the dozens.
London authorities claim that they had not received any warning, and of course terrorist activity is suspected. Prime Minister Tony Blair, who had been at the G-8 summit in Scotland along with President Bush and other world leaders, condemned the acts as "barbaric." President Bush has warned Americans to be "extra vigilant." Which is, you know, good advice.
There are now reports that a group calling itself “The Secret Organization of al-Qaida in Europe” has claimed responsibility for the attacks in London. Apparently they were retaliating against Britain’s involvement in Iraq and Afghanistan, and they are threatening Italy and Denmark with similar attacks if those countries do not pull their troops out of the war. The authenticity of the group and its claims is not yet confirmed.
The Austinist extends our prayers and condolences to our friends at the Londonist, as well as to all of the Londoners who have been affected by these heinous crimes.
