Do the Locomotion

Austinist finds something indelibly charming about old steam locomotives. Whether cruising along the French Riviera, jaunting across the vast Australian outback, or trekking along the American Southwest, we've always found them mysteriously soothing, relaxing, and, simply put - our ideal mode of transportation when schedule permits. Perhaps it's the rhythmic droning of the wheels on the tracks, or the plushly upholstered wood-paneled lounge cars where we've always conversed with the most fascinating travelers, or even just the deliberate ignorance of time from taking the long way to your destination.
Central Texas has its own share of steam train lines. Several, in fact - they run along what once was used by old Southern Pacific railroads and run in total length from Austin to Burnet. You can board the trains year-round, but if you've been meaning to check these out this weekend may be the perfect opportunity.
Saturday and Sunday in Burnet, the Austin Steam Train Association hosts the Texas Hill Country Railfair and Festival. Apart from offering short train rides, they'll be exhibiting a whole host of train-related memorabilia, from miniature model carriages to historial exhibits and much more. Admission to Railfair is $3 for adults and free for children; the separate Hill Country Flyer roundtrip ride from Cedar Park to Burnet (with a three-hour stopover for the festival) will run you $25, which includes a pass to Railfair as well. Check out their website for ticketing and additional information.
