Free (or Cheap) Movies Around Town

Because most of our paycheck is earmarked for: rent, food, liquor, Red Vines, shows, various political organizations, women of dubious origins, and blackmail payoffs, we often find it difficult to scrape together enough cash for a movie.

Luckily, Austinist reader Kelty G. was generous enough to share with us her extensive list of free (or very cheap!) movies around town, which we're passing onto you:

Public Service Announcement FREE (AND CHEAP) MOVIES ARE EVERYWHERE

This is a friendly reminder that for some odd reason that I still find inexplicable, there are TONS of free and low-cost movies in Austin. Below is a list of movie-viewing locations (listed by day of week):

EVERY DAY

Pedazo Chunk - starts at 9:00pm and offered almost everyday

Spiderhouse - free movies virtually every day at 9:00 or 10:00
Check the site for upcoming movies - there are some good ones on there.

MONDAY

Cafe Mundi - Monday nights at dark (approximately 8:30)
Free movies in the parking lot. Yummy food and laid-back atmosphere. Check the Chronicle for show listings.

Alamo Drafthouse $1 Monday Night Shows. Apparently this is a tradition from the original Alamo - all Monday night movies are $1 at the downtown location. Shows are approximately 7:00 and 9:45 - the later shows are music-themed.

THURSDAY

Jo's Coffee - music & movies on Thursday at 7:30 Different themes every month. You can bring dogs and lawn chairs and they have $2 longnecks during the show.

SATURDAY

Alamo Drafthouse Weekend Matinees (FREE)
Summer Kids Camp Weekend Matinee every weekend at the Alamo South Lamar at NOON. Grown-ups are allowed and it's free. Check the calendar at Alamo South to see the shows. Highlights in July are Goonies (July 9 & 10), Spongebob Squarepants (July 16 & 17) and The Last Unicorn (July 23 & 24) [Austinist comments: we are all over Spongebob]

Splash Movie Nights at Deep Eddy (NOT FREE but still neat)
Saturday night free movies in the pool. Admission is $3.00 for adults and $1.00 for children.

Thanks, Kelty! And as always folks, if you have a hot tip for us, please don't hesitate to contact your favorite staff writer.
