As we drove home last night from our rockin' Happy Hour at the Longbranch Inn, we noticed that a new store has (or will shortly) open in the new 2nd Street shopping area -- and it's a cool one: Design Within Reach. DWR is a store that sells designy stuff - modern chairs, plug-and-playable carpet tiles, fancy kitchen bits - for a slightly more reasonable price than you'd be able to find this stuff elsewhere. (Though, slightly more reasonable still frequently tops a grand or two...) The idea is to bring good, modern design to people, so that even those who don't subscribe to Wallpaper* can have a living room that looks like it came from the 1950's version of 2160. We like to pop in just to see what's available and what's cool, and sometimes to pick up a really nice spoon or lightbulb.
Austinist is super excited to have a DWR in our town, and super excited to see 2nd Street blooming into what might actually be a downtown we want to walk around. We also spotted a Jo's Coffee opening up on the same block. Anyone know what else is opening up down there?

As for DWR - how convenient, as I have a dollar tree growing out my ass right now!
Nice stuff, but as Justin notes, it is overpriced furniture for the new condo dwellers of downtown who have no idea how to spend their money.
