Sing It

So, we’ve told you about Karaoke before, as reader Jeremy points out, but we’ve left out some of the good bits. He and another Austinist reader, Sandra, have come to your rescue with this list of karaoke opportunities around town:

Mondays at Hickory Street where “there's always outrageous performances, including a waiter who sings ridiculous Whitney Houston renditions while writhing around on the floor.” [from Jeremy]

Mondays at Beerland

Tambaleo features DJ Mel on Wednesday nights providing Krunkeoke -- it's all old-school and new-school rap and hip-hop karaoke in front of a packed out crowd. Mel's co-host, Dave, provides Lil John-like backup to every singer and talks like he's Herbert Kornfeld from the Onion.” [Jeremy again]

And finally, Sandra’s gem: Austin Karaoke at 6800 N. Lamar in a new shopping center just south of Justin Lane. She tells us there are private rooms, millions of songs and a giant remote control labeled only in Korean. It’s BYOB, but they’ll provide mixers, a bucket of ice, and it’s open very late. This is really a find if you like everything about karaoke except the part about singing in front of strangers. It sounds just like the karaoke scene in Lost In Translation.

I did not care for Austin Karaoke. In fact, I thought it sort of sucked. Believe me, a shady shopping center does not compare to the cool karaoke high-rise in the middle of Tokyo. (Like the one in Lost in Translation.)

Jeremy! We would never, ever forget Krunkaoke!

I love Austin Karaoke - pretty cheap for the rooms.

There selection is huge, but a little odd. some major gaps in the ole collection, not enough madonna and tom petty for me, but all 3 times i have been we have managed to waste 2-3 hours without trying.
