God Bless Hut's Indeed

Unless you just moved here, you know about Hut's Hamburgers, the bigger than a hole-in-the-wall but not really big, kinda divey but not really divey hamburger joint on 6th Street near Lamar. Austinist forgets about it a lot, but sometimes we get this huge Hut's craving, which is why this weekend we found ourselves sitting in a booth among the college pendants, sipping our gallon of soda and eagerly waiting (is that our food? is that our food?).

There's a lot of history about how Hut's came into existence, and you can read all about it on the menu, if you can stop reading the menu items, that is. There are a lot of burgers to choose from, and other items like chicken fried steak and....honestly we don't know because we think ordering anything but a burger here is like ordering a burger at a Mexican restaurant. Gourmet seems like the wrong word to use for these burgers because it's Hut's. So, we'll call them creative.

There's burgers with swiss and pineapple, with guacamole and salsa, with blue cheese, but our favorite is the Fat's Domino, which is covered in cajun spices, and topped with lettuce, tomato, onion, cheese, and jalapenos. We skip the mayo and mustard and opt for Hut's bar-b-que sauce, which has a kick. We're not sure how their veggie burger is 100% fat free and still tastes so damn good, and we ignore our friend who says, "It's because they fry them on the grill with the real burgers." We try not to think about stuff like that. We do entertain the idea of trying to pass this off as a "healthy" eating out excursion, but stuffing our face with gigantic peppered onions that have taken a grease bath quickly negates any health benefit of the veggie burger. They are so good, we do not care. We use an entire bottle of ketchup at our table of three.

The service is usually good at Hut's. We like that the waiters are laid back and that the prices are reasonable. It's a family place, you'll see kids with chocolate shake mustaches, so watch the f-bombs.

If you're so inclined, tell us your favorite Hut's burger. Or, tell us about another burger joint that has Hut's beat.

As the one who commented, "It's because they fry them on the grill with the real burgers," I can say I truly miss Hut's. During the time I lived in Austin, I could always count on Hut's to cure a hangover or take care of a burger craving. The burgers were always the best and no one can compete with the variety. Now, as a New Yorker, I occassionaly think about Hut's. The city that has everything is missing a Hut's.

well, i tried to post my Top 10 list but movable type kept denying it...saying it was spam.

I just ate at Hut's for the first time last night and it rocked. It's awesomeness was ballooned by the fact that Mondays are 2-for-1 veggie burger night (and I believe Wednesdays are 2-for-1 any-kind-of-burger night).

I think they could have embellished my burger with more fixins, but their delicious veggie burger patty (their home recipe) and the tasty wheat bun made up for it. A friend of mine even said that their fries were the best he's ever had. It's such an incredible deal: burgers for 8 plus a big order of fries plus okra plus 3 soda pops plus 1 malted milk shake cost $31. Even if it weren't 2-for-1 night, the prices are very reasonable.

Thanks Monica! I meant to include the 2 for 1 deal. You do have to order the same 2 for 1, but who cares! It's a really good deal. And you're right, it is veggie on Monday and regular burgers on Wednesday.

The Richie Valens burger at Hut's rocks.

My favorite "burger joint" in Austin is Dirty's, up at the north end of The Drag. But the best burgers in town aren't at a burger place, they're at the lunch counter at Nau's Enfield Drugs, in Clarkesville. Hand-pressed patties, toasted buns, and a chocolate shake. These are the best burgers you can buy just about anywhere.

good list Justin! i haven't been to Nau's in years but I used to love it - so classic smalltown drug store and lunch counter.

I also think the richie valens or the beach boy are great topping combos for burgers at huts...

where are the best veggie burgers though?
personally i like:
waterloo ice house - though not homemade
and huts

but i know there are so so many more, please broaden my horizons

I like the veggie burgers at Crown and Anchor and the eggplant (although cooked on the same grill as the meat) burger at El Camino.
