Ignorance: Not Just For The Federal Government

Looking back over the past couple of years we realize how much time we’ve spent thinking about how the U.S. is pissing off the rest of the world in gigantic, expensive and extravagant ways. Really, intolerance on a global scale has driven us to distraction.

That’s why we were unpleasantly surprised to turn our attention to more local disappointments today when we learned that UT student Ross Bennett was a victim of a hate crime.

The incident happened on May 6 when Ross Bennett returned home to his fraternity house, Zeta Beta Tau. He was met by four men waiting on the front steps. What happened next took only a matter of seconds.
"And they go, 'Are you Jewish?' and I said, 'Yeah,' and all of a sudden they threw me over this ledge," Bennett said. "It was up over, punch, punch, punch, punch, punch, kick, run inside."

Looky there. It seems that while most Americans who fall into the demographic that we will politely call “ignorant” have been busy hating those of a Middle Eastern persuasion, this fine group has taken the opportunity to commit a seemingly random act of anti-Semitism right here in our little liberal town.

But wait! It doesn’t stop there! In response to this event and others, the UT Student Government has been motivated to release a pamphlet and a call to awareness.

Who are these people and what are they doing in our town? I do hope they read Student Government Pamphlets.
