Car Troubles? It's Probably Your Fault.

carcrash.jpg

So now it's official: Austinites are some of the worst drivers in the country. According to a report published yesterday by Allstate Insurance Company entitled America's Best Drivers, we ... weren't among them. Austin came in at #176 - right below New York City.

Honestly, New York City, Austinites! Everyone knows that Gothamists drive blindfolded, give each other the finger when changing lanes, and only pay passing attention to "traffic lights." And they eat their babies.* They out-drove us?

Austinist wasn't all that surprised to hear this, though. More than once have we slapdashedly U-turned under the freeway and refused to consider the other cars merging into our lane. We call this "being resolute." And if you're one of the unlucky schmucks who've been on I-35 on a Friday or Saturday night, you know that it's the longest parking lot in Central Texas.

From the report, each of us can expect a paltry 7.5 years between car accidents. This makes us seriously reconsider our dream of zipping around town in a Vespa - perhaps all the size queens in their Hummers had it right after all.

Eyes on the road, citizens.

*We kid, we kid! Blindfolds were so last fall.

The woman who rear-ended me was insured by Allstate. Maybe they're just studying their own drivers?
