That Cloud Looks Like Aerosmith

Wake up. Go to work. Go to bar. Go to rock show. Go to sleep. Repeat. If this is beginning to sound like your life, too, we encourage you to break the mold this weekend. Skip Bright Eyes on Saturday and head to Emo’s instead for a night of comedy and music with Eugene Mirman, Andy Blitz and Langhorne Slim. We have been fans of Mirman (who has opened for The Shins and toured with Modest Mouse and Yo La Tengo) ever since our friend (thankfully) insisted on showing us the videos on Mirman’s website. His latest cd, “The Absurd Nightclub Comedy of Eugene Mirman” got us through an excruciating drive to the recesses of northeast Texas recently. Next up is Andy Blitz, whose credits include several awards as a member of the writing team for Late Night with Conan O'Brien. Not too shabby. The show starts at 10 p.m. with local party band, Canoe (who we seem to mention in every post) and ends with bluegrass artist Langhorne Slim so you won’t go into shock from music-deprivation (it’s okay, old habits die hard). Apparently the latter’s “old-timey country blues is tempered with the occasional outburst of punk rock insolence” and “His stage performance must be seen to be believed.” So there you have it.

If stand-up’s not your thing, there’s still an alternative to having to endure anemic losers yelling “Conor, I’m a vegan, too!” in the backyard of Stubb’s (we’re not kidding…someone actually thought it was okay to scream this at the last Bright Eyes concert at La Zona Rosa). The cool kids at Karaoke Underground are hosting a championship round at The Ritz Upstairs starting at 9 p.m. Brush up on your Stooges, your Misfits, your Talking Heads, your Sleater-Kinney, your Big Boys and your Mountain Goats and win great prizes from Waterloo Records, Factory People, Indie Pop, and, of course, the Karaoke Underground. The champion not only gets the coveted KU trophy, but also wins a free KU house party. Singing your ass off never felt so good!
