NIN Tonight at Stubb's

ROCK AND ROLL MAN!

Nine Inch Nails, on tour in support of their new (fantastic) album, With Teeth, will be playing tonight at Stubb's. Their opening band is The Dresden Dolls, about whom we've known for a while, thus making us cool. But cool is not the same as concert tickets, a fact about which we are very sad. Ironically, the birth of this very web site is what kept us from purchasing those highly coveted little pieces of paper.

But Austinist is not a web site that is easily put down. We will be hiding in a dark corner somewhere near Stubb's with some high tech spy gear in the hopes of hearing the show, and perhaps catching a glimpse of Mr. Reznor as he freaks out and fires one of his roadies on stage. You can beat the goth out of a teenager, but a true and deep love for industrial music will never die.

That is, unless someone wants to trade a ticket for three dozen fresh eggs.

Ok, not to get all crazy on yer booty, or anyone else's for that matter, who insists, eternally seeming, on mentioning the 'industrial' bent of Mr. Reznor, just because he likes to make loud noises and scream a bit, BUUUUt - I'm gonna.

Come on, he's not rrrrreally 'industrial' in the veins of say, um.... Front Line Assembly. I mean, what other 'industrial' bands have had as high ranking hits on the pop chart? I'm not saying that charting defines goodness (that's a whole nother black hole of discussion I must avoid), but generally, you need to be poppy to be on the pop chart. You need to be able to actually discern words (forget that nice 80's wonder 'Axel F' from Beverly Hills Cop), and have catchy tunes. Trent does in fact have a bunch of memorable catchy tunes, which sure makes it tough for me to label him 'industrial'.... he's got identifiable hooks, choruses, verses..

What can I tell ya, I said the same thing in 1990, when 'alternative' was supposedly, really alternative, and I'm sayin' it again now. I still love all his stuff, I just can't say it's really representative of 'industrial' music.

[removing ranty soapbox now]

Thank you.
