Starting tonight, "The Producers" comes to Austin for a weeklong run at Bass Concert Hall. With Bob Amaral playing failed musical producer Max Bialystock and Andy Taylor in the role of accountant Leo Bloom, we're sure this will be a hilarious and faithful rendition of the Broadway phenomenom, which has won just about every Tony Award ever. This outta tide you over until the movie remake starring Will Ferrell, Uma Thurman, Nathan Lane and Matthew Broderick comes out next year.
We haven't actually seen it before (the closest we got was in the season finale of Curb Your Enthusiasm, where Larry takes on the role of Bialystock alongside Ben Stiller's Bloom, forgets his lines halfway in the second act and ends up instead delivering an improv comedy monologue), but all of our friends back in New York wholeheartedly endorse it. From what we gather, it involves a Nazi musical titled "Springtime for Hitler", a foxy Swedish actress, and a flamboyant director all involved somehow in Max and Leo's foolproof plan: to engineer the ultimate Broadway flop and somehow make a ton of money in the process.
Last time we checked online, tickets are still available at the various price points - ranging from $17.50 to $62.50. The Producers runs through Sunday, with showings at 8pm Tuesday-Friday, 2pm and 8pm on Saturday, and 2pm and 7:30pm on Sunday.
