We know that sweet, sweet music gets most of the attention in this little Texas oasis of ours. But Austin has an art scene, too! We swear!
Seriously, have you even bothered to check out what’s happening at the AMOA right now? No? Fine, we’ll tell you.
The Color/Patterns/Grid exhibit at the downtown AMOA is running through May 15 (that’s this Sunday) and features artworks from Picasso, Bonnard, Toulouse-Lautrec, Matisse, Warhol, and many more. We got a chance to view some of these works before the exhibit officially opened, and we're not professional art critics, but it was pretty damn cool.
If you’re looking for a really neat day trip, join the AMOA on its Art Trek to the Texas Hill Country this Saturday, May 14th. A bus (one of those fancy-schmancy “coaches” – what is this, Britain?) will take you to the studios of three regional working artists. You will also enjoy a delectable lunch at the famous Hudson’s on the Bend. Tickets are $75 per person, which covers all costs, including lunch. Go here for more information or to purchase tickets.
We are particularly excited about the upcoming Annie Leibovitz: American Music exhibit, which will run from May 28th through August 7th. This exhibit will “pay tribute to the richness of the rural landscape and the way in which community informs the musicians’ art.” Also on view with Leibovitz’s work will be the paintings of Charles Mary Kubricht. In Scanning the Grand Canyon, Kubricht “distills experiences of space, time, and nature into monumental abstract landscapes of one of the earth’s most spectacular environments.”
Why not explore your own inner artist? The Art School at the gorgeous Laguna Gloria site offers numerous classes for all ages. This coming weekend they are offering a Painting Boot Camp, a class that will help you understand color and how to apply oil or acrylic paint for a firm foundation for future work. Who knows? You could be the next Picasso! Unless we beat you to it…

great post! you've convinced me to finally check out AMOA this weekend.
I hate Annie Leibovitz almost as much as I hate Anne Geddes.
YOU'RE the one I hate, Juice! YOU!
Allen - I'm glad!
