Local Band Gets National Media Attention

spoon3.jpg
Every now and then a local band gets some big-time national publicity: Fastball, Los Lonely Boys, Bob Schneider, to name a few from the past decade. You can now add Spoon to that list. The minimalist rock band from the River City has its latest release, "Gimme Fiction," covered in next week's issue of Time Magazine (5/16). The magazine admits that while the songwriting and sound are not wholly unique, the band does what they do very well, indeed, and that is, take classic themes of love and loss and rock them out without too many bells and whistles. The result of which is a catchy new turn on a traditional rock and roll sound.

And Time is not the only national publication to put its spotlight on the Austin band. Music industry giant Rolling Stone also reviewed “Gimme Fiction” and gave the new release a healthy 3 ½ stars .

The boys are out on the road, but you can catch them here in town again in late June when they take the stage at Stubb's to rock.

as a spoon fan circa telephono, i have been watching these guys as a band on brink for so long - sure that any moment they were going to bust out and take over the world (or at least a few more stereos). changing labels, getting dropped from another have slowed this, but in some ways it strengthen the show I see them put on these days.

SXSW 2003 I watched Britt and the boys take the stage at Stubb's and showcase who they'd grown into. People all around were buzzing after that performance, many never having seen them play live, and it was evident, again, that they had what it took to capture a larger audience and make it 'big'. As I am always glad to see hometown boys do well and glad to hear national media is covering them, again, i wish 'em the best.

    :)
