Help Send Books to Prisoners Thirsting for Knowledge
Austin’s Inside Book Project works year-round to send literature to Texas prison inmates who request books. This weekend they will be holding one of their marathon volunteer drives/parties to package materials and catch-up on 2,000 back requests. They are meeting at their collection center (300 Allen St., 3 blocks east of E. 5th and Pleasant Valley) from right this second until Sunday at 6pm. The work goes on around-the-clock, so you can stop in to help for an hour, or bring a sleeping bag and settle in for the night. The nice folks from the Inside Book Project will provide food, just bring your big, open heart, a few books/dictionaries and maybe some packaging supplies and be prepared to have a good time doing some work for a very worthy cause.
This non-profit organization also has volunteer hours each week, Thursday from 6pm-10pm and Sunday from 7pm–midnight. Alternatively, you can make drop-off donations anytime at 12th Street Books, located at 827 W. 12th.
