Ándale Ándale, Mamma, Eyore Eyore, Uh Oh!

eyore.jpg Austin has built its reputation of being a fun, liberal, artistic and open community in part due to activities such as this weekend’s annual Eeyore’s Birthday Party in Pease Park. About 40 years ago, University of Texas Delta Tau Delta fraternity member Lloyd Birdwell and some of his buddies started this fictional birthday party, partly as a spring rite of passage and partly out of the desire to throw a big ol’ party in Pease Park.

Over the years the celebration has become an Austin-area staple, bringing out thousands of people, from infants to septuagenarians. Admission, as always, is free and party goers can spend the day dancing to local bands, sitting in on drum circles, eating birthday cake, drinking beer from local vendors, participating in costume contests, or kicking the hacky-sack. The celebration of everyone’s favorite grumpy donkey begins at 11am this Saturday and runs until sundown.

Don’t forget to wear a costume that would make the grumpy one smile and let your freak flag fly. But don’t bring cans, coolers or bottles to the park, there will be plenty of stuff to buy there, with proceeds benefiting several local non-profits. Dogs are allowed but must stay on their leashes. Although Eeyore gets most of the publicity this weekend, we love all of Pooh’s friends. And while we sometimes feel like Owl, we really identify with Tigger. Which one of your favorite characters from the Enchanted Forest do you most resemble or what is one of your favorite memories from Eeyore’s Birthdays past?
