Texas House OK's Constitutionalizing Discrimination
In an incredibly dissapointing vote of 101 to 29, Texas House lawmakers have passed a constitutional ammendment to ban gay marriage.
HJR 6, the Defence of Marriage Act, basically states the following:

Sec. 32. (a) Marriage in this state shall consist only of the union of one man and one woman. (b) This state or a political subdivision of this state may not create or recognize any legal status identical or similar to marriage.
So, not only does it ban gay couples from getting married, it eliminates the possibility of creating 'seperate but equal' civil unions anywhere in the State.
This ammendment comes less than a week after the Texas House passed a bill that would prohibit homosexuals and bisexuals from becoming foster parents.
HJR 6 has been sent to the Senate. If it passes there, the ammendment still has to be ratified by the Texas voters before it can become part of the constitution.
For now, feel free to check out The Lesbian/Gay Rights Lobby of Texas to stay informed on this legislation. Then, when the time comes, we here at the Austinist propose the following: if HJR 6 passes in the Senate (and we are expecting that it will), we hope you will get your ass to the polls and vote against this ignorant and archaic offense to all thinking peoples' sensibilities.
