Love what you're livin' on: Hey, it's Earth Day!
Have you seen this little chart from Mother Jones? My, it’s scary. Apparently oil giant ExxonMobile has been shelling out mad cash to prominent organizations to downplay - or downright reject – the issue of global warming. Sadly, ExxonMobile is not the only environmental baddie in the world. We’re not going to name any more names (ahem), but take a look at these photos for some pictorial representation of what’s happening to our planet.
Before you get all depressed and go drown your sorrows in Mexican martinis, there are many things you can do to help out here in Austin. Since today is Earth Day, we thought we'd compile a list of organizations and community projects around our fair city that are doing their part to make our little corner of the world a nicer, cleaner, greener place to be.
Here are some links to check out, in no particular order:
The Yellow Bike Project
A community project that fixes up found and donated bikes for riders to share all over Austin.
Save Our Springs Alliance
Dedicated to protecting Central Texas’ ecologically sensitive areas – Barton Springs, the Edwards Aquifer, and other parts of the beautiful Texas Hill Country.
Ecology Action
Go here to learn about recycling programs in our area.
Keep Austin Beautiful
Just what it sounds like!
Austin Energy
Austin Energy offers you the option to choose your electricity from clean, renewable sources. It doesn’t cost much, and it’s easy!
Austin Parks
Events, activities, and ways to be involved in the preservation of Austin’s beautiful green spaces.
MAIN’s Environmental Directory
A more comprehensive list of local environmental groups.
**Also, don’t forget about It’s My Park Day tomorrow!**
If you have any environmental groups that you’re particularly attached to, or if you know of anything environmentally sound (or unsound) going on around town, post in the comments! C’mon, do it!
