Lance's Last?

LanceArmstrong.jpg Lance Armstrong, six time Tour de France winner and Austin homeboy, announced yesterday that this next Tour would be his last professional race. The almost universally loved cyclist (thanks France) has surpassed unimaginable obstacles to achieve his status, not just as the preeminent cyclist of his day, but the finest endurance athlete in modern history.

Despite testicular cancer and constant accusations of steroid use, Lance has powered through all opposition on the basis of his will alone. Now at 33, Lance has decided to put his children first, so that he will be there to watch them grow. The long months of training often removed Lance from those he loved most at critical times in their development.

Austinist remembers the many times we looked up at the University of Texas tower, viewing the giant L spread across its four sides. The feeling of pride flowed deeply throughout, knowing that soon he would be back in the fold to celebrate. We look forward to seeing that same L, and feeling that same pride again.

If anything, Lance Armstrong defines what we love best about heroes: His indomitable will to achieve, despite odds better suited for the lottery. Austinist and Austinites will miss your unrivaled performances Lance, but we will never forget.
