Glen Phillips @ The Parish Room Friday 4/15

glen.jpg Singer-songwriter Glen Phillips first burst onto the music scene in the 90's as the lead singer of Toad the Wet Sprocket, a group of four guys from the laid-back, sun-drenched California beachside town of Santa Barbara. Remember "All I Want" or "Come Down"?
After Toad broke up in 1998, Phillips went on to a fairly promising solo career, releasing in 2001 the highly acclaimed Abulum. This album was largely a reminiscence of days long past; at times it was startingly depressing, but every so often it managed to make you laugh, conveying that humor that comes from reflecting on an awkward past. Any way you look at it, it was a great example of storytelling set to a little chilled-out folk-pop.

We haven't yet heard Phillips' new album, Winter Pays for Summer, but from initial reviews it seems a good endeavor: expect guest appearances from "Michael Chavez (John Mayer), Greg Suran (Goo Goo Dolls) and Jon Brion (Fiona Apple, Aimee Mann, Rufus Wainwright), along with vocalists Andy Sturmer (Jellyfish), Kristin Mooney and Ben Folds."

Every once in a while we all need a break from indie rock - this may just be it. Check out his set tomorrow night at the Parish Room. Show starts at 8. Come after the first-ever Austinist Happy Hour!
Tickets are available at Waterloo Records, or Frontgate
