Austinist was delighted to find a hidden treasure on South Congress the other day as we went looking for a birthday gift. Red Texture Studios has found a home at 2002 S. Congress right near Magnolia Cafe.
Artists and founders Kathleen C. Grandfield and Russell W. Reid started off in Austin with a downtown location but soon found their niche in funky South Austin. In addition to Kathleen's jewelry designs and Russell's paintings, Red Texture features a variety of unique hand-picked items from around the world.
As an artist, Kathleen told us she wanted to use the store to make art more accessible to everyone, so they make a special effort to provide beautiful high-style accessories that are also affordable. Her own sterling silver and semi-precious stone jewelry designs are sold at the store at great prices. Additionally, there's everything from handmade one of-a-kind handbags to hand painted silk ties by Austin's own Ebru artist, Cosette.
The store works with two or three husband-and-wife artist teams to provide Austinites with amazing creations such as the beaded shawl, pictured here. We were shocked to learn that one could purchase such a thing for under $50.
Russell's art can not only be seen at the Studio but around town as well. He specializes in large art installations. You can see an example of his work at SoLa where there's a painting in tribute to Alfonse Mucha, the father of Art Nouveau.
