Serene Cycling and Skating

veloway1.jpgIn the mood to get a little exercise but don't want ride amongst cars or dodge people and pets? We have the perfect spot for you.

The Veloway, located on more than 100 acres of parkland in the Slaughter Creek Metropolitan Park, is a 3.1 mile paved loop winding through Austin's hill country. Use is reserved exclusively for bicycles and inline skaters. No cars, joggers, walkers, pets, or skateboards. The 23 foot wide course is split into two lanes; one for speeding along or passing and one for cruising. There are a couple moderate inclines, a few lazy declines, and one short but steep hill you have to crest. There are also a couple of turn offs you can take if you don't want to do the entire 3.1 mile loop (or if you just want to avoid the hill).

The park is open from dawn to dusk daily. Parking for the trail can be accessed from Mopac, south of Slaughter Lane, or from Bowie High School during non-school hours (weekdays after 4:30 p.m. and all day on weekends).

The only exceptions we know about are on Saturday April 2 from 9am-4pm, Sunday April 10 from 12noon - 6pm, and Friday June 10 from 7am-12 noon, when the park will be closed to the public.

Anyone else utterly disappointed that Austin is a rollerblading wasteland? Aside from the Veloway (which is amazingly cool), there exists no other smooth surface of decent length for rollerblading. And for those of us who live in central Austin and get about by bike and bus, the Veloway is just too bloody far to make rollerblading a permanent fixture in our Austin lifestyle. It makes me sad! If there are any rollerblading routes I'm not aware of, please let me know! (I come from Chicago where rollerblading was my primary mode of transport and I miss it dearly!)

Unfortunately, this is the only one i have found so far.
