Austinist Eats Out in Style at Hudson's on the Bend
While we at the Austinist love our barbeque and fallafel and breakfast tacos, we are not scared to get high-brow every once in awhile (especially if someone else is paying). It is for this reason we recently ended up at Hudson’s on the Bend for a decadent dinner.
Hudson’s is located just outside of town on RR 620 and features some of the most delicious game you will find anywhere in Texas. Their menu is non-traditional to say the least; where else in Austin can you find rattlesnake cakes, rabbit ravioli or kangaroo? And they even have a somellier. Ooh la la.
Hudson’s was built out of a former house and maintains a quaint, homey feeling, with stone floors and cedar posts supporting the structure throughout the restaurant. As it is still Austin, we were comfortable in jeans, regardless of the prices, but the meal was anything but pedestrian.
We started with the scrumptious rabbit and goat cheese quesadillas and a smoked salmon ceasar salad. Although the quesadilla was a bit small (think Saturday Night Live sketch-sized) they were one of the best appetizers we have ever tried. The salmon was cooked perfectly, and the salad’s size did not disappoint. As the menu is so broad and full of things you may never try again, we shared everything. The mixed grill contained rabbit, quail, venison and venison sausage, and although tasty and different, was not out-of-this-world. The longhorn steak covered in a creamy lobster offered a nice contrast of gamey and rich flavors. But the piece de resistance was the prime angus ribeye, which all agreed may have been the most flavorful and succulent piece of meat we had ever tasted.
Dessert was a trio of crème brulee: chocolate, espresso and vanilla. Silly old Austinist, we always thought crème brulee only came in one flavor. We were wrong. However, all agreed they should have saved themselves the trouble and stuck with plain-ol-vanilla, as it was far and away the best. The chocolate crème brulee reminded us of eating chocolate frosting straight from the tube; so if that is your thing, by all means…
As one would expect, the service was professional, courteous and by-the-book; however our waiter lacked personality and seemed in a hurry to check on his other tables, whether this was because they represented a big percentage of his tips for the night or he had had one too many chocolate crème brulee, we were not certain.
The overall experience was a unique and pleasurable, if maybe somewhat overpriced, one. So, if you want something off the beaten path in a rustic and romantic setting, get on out to Hudson’s and sample some of their fabulous wild game. Just make sure you take that credit card with the lowest balance … or your sugardaddy.
