If you wandered past Town Lake this morning you probably noticed the unusually large crowd of runners out. Apart from an excuse to gorge even more on Easter night, most of the men and women (and dogs) out there are most likely training for next Sunday's annual rite of spring known as the Statesman Capitol 10K.
The Cap 10k is by far the largest annual race in Austin, with over 15,000 runners estimated for this year. More than just a plain ole' race, encourages its participants to show up sporting a Crazy Hat or even run the race in costume. Austinist thinks this may be the perfect excuse to show off those dreadful rags that didn't get you onto Project:Runway.
Music along the 6.6-mile race course includes Deb Yager & The Boys, Trent Turner, Kat Nelson & The Revelators, Bull Creek Grifters, Sharee' Allison Band, Jackson, and the colorfully monikered foursome, Spue. Austinist hasn't actually heard of any of these guys, but anonymous sources assure us they'll be playing great "Running Music" Oddly enough this conjures up memories of the Chariots of Fire soundtrack.
The race starts will be staggered at 8:30, 8:45, and 9:00 for wheelchair athletes, chip-timed runners, and un-timed "Fun Run/Walk"-ers. Don't forget to pick up your chip this Friday or Saturday at the Expo.
Austinist will be bringing a cheapo disposable camera along with us, so hopefully we'll have a few shots posted after the race. Better yet, go check it out yourself next Sunday!
