Many of you who frequent the Hotel San Jose on South Congress - either for a drink, or just to drink in the ultra-cool design theme - may be aware that the owners recently opened a sister hotel in the tiny West Texas town of Marfa (and we're talking TINY - a population that barely tops 2100!). Well, Austinist recently had the opportunity to check out the new digs (called the Thunderbird Hotel) and would recommend it for anyone looking for a surreal getaway (and willing to drive seven hours into what truly must be the middle of NOWHERE). The hotel has the minimalist design and nice touches that reminded us of the Austin original; and Marfa itself is a strangely unique mix of rural Southwest and wealthy art communities that leaves us asking... How? Why?
Whatever the reason... It's all pretty cool. And supposedly one might view the mysterious "Marfa Lights" (an unexplained phenomena in the night sky) while out there. We didn't see anything though; and more than one local confided in us that what people see might have much to do with how much they've had to drink... Next time we'll bring more wine.
The Thunderbird doesn't seem to have a website yet, but you can call them at (432) 729-1984... and/or check out the San Jose at www.sanjosehotel.com. It's a much shorter drive, and definitely a local must see...

How long is the drive to Marfa?
Um...
"...and willing to drive seven hours..."
*sniff* Sometimes I think you just aren't listening anymore...
Kidding aside, it is a serious trek... IMO it must be done in the spirit of the adventure, not just for the destination...
